GREEN TEAM FULL MATCH REPORT
Wednesday, September 24th, 2008FC Denver suffered their first defeat of the season against Sefton FC. The game started slowly for both teams, with Sefton eventually gaining the upper hand by going 1-0 up. Green were all sorts and unable to find any rhythm in the game until the equalizer came, scored when Cris Pomager crossed, Chris Keel applied enough pressure on the backline, with the ball deflecting of Sefton’s defender’s head into the goal. However, Sefton soon regained momentum and scored a second, after a collision between Mike Topey and Sefton’s striker, allowed Sefton to score. Afterwards, Green came back, and started to take control of the midfield, and some neat play allowed Antonio Neto to strike a rasping shot, which was goal bound, only for Sefton’s keeper to somehow get a finger tip and make a spectacular save to thwart the move. Green continued pressing, with several more plays, but that elusive goal could not be had.
At the start of the second half, Green began to fight, with Antonio and Jeremy Spingath, pushing Sefton back, fighting for every ball, freeing up Adam Morrell, causing major problems for Sefton. After 15 minutes of play, Green won a corner, taken by Jeremy, the corner fell into the area, and Dragan Levic struck the ball, with the ball making contact with two Sefton defenders, eventually finding the net. But, the celebrations were short lived, Sefton again took the lead. Moments later, Green again attacked, with Chris Keel making a run on goal, he was brought down in the area, a penalty was given, and Green were given another chance to salvage something. The penalty was converted, by Coach, Stephen Harries, Green were again level, 3-3. Yet again, Sefton found a way to fight back, and a free kick was awarded outside Green’s area, only for Sefton to score again, 4-3. Green continued to press and dominate the second half, with some excellent passing, counter attacking and link up play between midfield and the forwards, but a route to goal could not be found. With a few minutes remaining, Sefton had a late charge into Green’s area, shooting the ball, it bounced and hit one of Green’s players on the arm. A penalty was given, and converted, Sefton were now 5-3 up.
A dominant and spirited Green second half saw them lose the game, which the team felt they deserved to win, but sometimes it goes for you and sometimes it doesn’t. Green sadly lose 5-3, leaving them 1-1-1 so far this season, let’s hope they turn out in force next week against Colorado Sporting Select!
