COED, WHITE TEAM SCRIMMAGE, BBQ, AND KICKBALL

Thursday night was the FC Denver Premier Coed Championships. The team played hard but ended up losing 2-1. From what i understand the season was kind of a roller coaster ride, so it was nice to see the team put together a solid stretch at the end to make it to the final. Everyone played well, but soccer is a cruel sport sometimes. Luckily the fall season and a whole bunch of soccer is just around the corner.

Thursday night the White Team, led by Chris Lobkovich, played a scrimmage against Sefton FC, just a few fields down from the coed game. Chris informed me that the team played exceptionally well despite losing 3-2. It was their first match together as a team and they dominated a very good Sefton team that has been together for a few years. With a few more matches under their belt this team, along with our Green team, should be challenging for a top of the table finish in the CASL second division.

Champions League Groups

The Champions League groups have been selected, and here are some of my thoughts and things I’m looking forward to.

You can see all the groups here:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=566834&sec=uefachampionsleague&cc=5901

The reigning European champions, Manchester United, have been grouped with Villarreal, Celtic, and Danish side Aalborg. The young American forward Jozy Altidore signed with Villarreal over the summer and could get a taste of European football in his first season. American/Italian Giuseppe Rossi is also a striker for the yellow submarines.

Group H has Real Madrid, Juventus, St. Zenit (2008 UEFA Cup Champions), and BATE Borisov. Real Madrid and Juventus look like the favorites to come out of this Group. St. Zenit superstar playmaker Andrei Arshavin looks set to leave the Russian side and that could really hurt their chances to advance.

Fernando Torres gets to return to Vicente Calderon Stadium, when his current team Liverpool plays his former side Atletico Madrid in Group D.

It will be interesting to see what Mourinho will do differently with Inter Milan, after his Chelsea side failed to win a Champions League trophy. Bremen looks like their only real test in Group B.

Alright, those are just some initial thoughts from the draw. Let me know what you think about this year’s Champions League groups.
