Champions League Groups

The Champions League groups have been selected, and here are some of my thoughts and things I’m looking forward to.

You can see all the groups here:

The reigning European champions, Manchester United, have been grouped with Villarreal, Celtic, and Danish side Aalborg. The young American forward Jozy Altidore signed with Villarreal over the summer and could get a taste of European football in his first season. American/Italian Giuseppe Rossi is also a striker for the yellow submarines.

Group H has Real Madrid, Juventus, St. Zenit (2008 UEFA Cup Champions), and BATE Borisov. Real Madrid and Juventus look like the favorites to come out of this Group. St. Zenit superstar playmaker Andrei Arshavin looks set to leave the Russian side and that could really hurt their chances to advance.

Fernando Torres gets to return to Vicente Calderon Stadium, when his current team Liverpool plays his former side Atletico Madrid in Group D.

It will be interesting to see what Mourinho will do differently with Inter Milan, after his Chelsea side failed to win a Champions League trophy. Bremen looks like their only real test in Group B.

Alright, those are just some initial thoughts from the draw. Let me know what you think about this year’s Champions League groups.

Hello everyone!!! This is the official first post of the new FC Denver blog. My name is Daniel Valenzuela, most of you might already know me, but for those of you who don’t here is brief bio.

I was born and raised in Southern California, specifically Burbank, CA. I’ve played competitive soccer my entire life, including a short stint with the SDSU D1 program, and semi pro with the now defunct San Diego Gauchos. I moved out here to Denver to work on my masters during the winter of 2006, and in that time i met Eric Fulton, the director of FC Denver. We realized we had a similar passion for soccer and a similar vision of creating a one of a kind soccer club for adults. I left Denver for a few months to take care of some things back home in Cali, but i’m back now ready to take FC Denver to the next level, and start law school. I currently serve as a player/coach/director for the club, and i have now added official blogger to my list of duties.

So what should you expect on this blog? First and foremost, i hope to keep everyone updated on FC Denver events. You will also be able to find recaps of the club’s weekend soccer action. I hope to get interviews, guest bloggers, special features, pictures, video, international soccer news and commentary, and much more as the season progresses.

Please feel free leave any comments, suggestions, questions. Let me know what you want to see, and I’ll do my best to blog about it. Stay tuned for many more posts to come.
