TEAM UPDATE: Masters Start Strong

MastersChampions
The Masters team (Over 30 for those that may not know what “Masters” means) has enjoyed a very strong start to the spring season, thanks to a great collective effort from the entire roster.  Despite multiple changes to each weekend’s lineup, the team began the season 3-0 for the first time in history (I think), securing wins over two of their main rivals for the Championship early in the season.

In the opening weekend Masters defeated the newly promoted “Raging Bull” 5-1 on a cool and slightly frosted morning.  Goals came from Kyle Firebaugh (2), new player Chris Ross and Wardell Dupuy.   A nice comfortable win to kick off the season was just what the doctor ordered because the following weekend, we squared off against perennial contender and rival Rover30…

Thanks to the confidence from our first match, we were able to put together a great team performance especially on the defensive end and came out with a tight 1-0 victory over Rover30.  Man of the Match performance from Chris Ross in the back line, a crucial clearance off the line by another new player Zach Roth, as well as a clinical finish from Langston Anthony saw off our talented opponents.   Two wins from two, gave us plenty of incentive to take on another rival the third week, Colorado Sporting, who defeated us in the Championship last fall on a controversial FK in stoppage time…

With a full squad on both sides, Sporting and Masters “cordially” reintroduced ourselves for the 2014 campaign this last Sunday morning.  Sporting has brought back many of their former premier players making their over-30 team quite formidable and Masters top competitor for the Championships again in 2014.  Despite entertaining the better play, we found ourselves down 1-0 at halftime due to one mistake in the back.  But, as Masters have shown thus far this season, we are a deep, talented and focused group and rallied in the second half to come back and win 2-1.  An early second half header goal on a corner kick from Kyle Firebaugh, (yes, a HEADER!!) saw us jump back in the game quickly.  That was followed with multiple chances to go ahead but the breakthrough didn’t come until close to the 75th minute mark when Ian Shipps was sprung on a breakaway by a delicious through ball from Jason Tundermann.  Ian supplied the cool left footed finish to beat the keeper and our defense was called on to hold the lead despite a few close calls and saves from Lionel Orozco to preserve the 2-1 victory.   Man of the Match performance from Ian Shipps who gave their midfield fits all day and scored the decisive goal for us.

So nine points from a possible nine for Masters, plus victories over our two primary contenders as we start the 2014 Spring season.  Not bad for a bunch of 30+ guys!!
