Spring 2019 CPL Game Week 6 Recap

Premier Division:

Premier vs Altas
Result: Won 4-1
Coach Recap: Premier played Atlas and got on the board early with a solid corner from Jake Lister that Joel put away smoothly. The game got a little sloppy with not many chances then Atlas equalized on an unfortunate error. We turned on the pressure and started to possession and build with very creative movement and play. It lead to a great hustle goal by Tyler Chauncey. Half ended 2-1. In the second we continued to press and possess. It lead to an Alex Nelson goal of a cross from Lashaw Salta after beating the keeper to the ball on the edge of the box. From there we continued to push pressure on Atlas with chance after chance. Our final goal came off a free kick from Tyler Chauncey that took a deflection of a defender in front and in the back of the net. It was a great game that finally saw us play the creative attacking style we know we can.

United vs Union Jerez
Result: Tied 3-3
Coach Recap: We had a great start but our intensity dropped with about 10 minutes left and they got one back off a header. We came out flat in the start of the half and they equalized early in the half. The game got chippy and Union Jerez got the go ahead goal. We fought back and ultimately equalized the game with 10 minutes left. Unfortunately that lead to one of Jerez'' players starting a fight with our bench when one of their players who was injured punched on of our bench players in the face, and their whole bench rushed our technical area. The game ended prematurely as the game started 20 minutes late due to the refs and union, and our field rental ended at 8.

Elite Division:

U19 vs Victoria Kickers
Result: Lost 3-4
Recap: The U19's struggled mightily yesterday losing a heartbreaker 4-3 to the Victoria Kickers.  We had a great first half figuring out how to breakdown their very compressed style of play defensively and were breaking in on either flanks by getting early diagonal balls into the outside channels and springing our wing midfielders in behind.  This adjustment resulted in our having success offensively and ultimately resulted in our 3 goals. Unfortunately, we were not able to carry that same level of consistency into the second half and things began to erode from there.  Our lack of composure became one of our biggest enemy, and the Kickers slowly but surely climbed their way back into the match as the second half progressed.  We had a few bright spots throughout, one of them being our FutPost man of the match Gabe Arreola, who continued to work hard off the ball when in possession, as well as, defensively, and was creating most of our chances for us going forward.  Although yesterdays defeat all but insures our non playoff birth, we learned a ton about ourselves, our character, and how we respond to situations that don't go our way!  I'm super proud of each and every one of the U19's and how hard they've worked on improving themselves over these last 8+ months or so, and nothing can take away from what they've accomplished up to this point.

Masters vs Union Jerez 2
Result: Won 5-1
Coaches Recap: Masters defeated Union Jerez 2 by a score of 5-1 to improve to 4-1-0 (12 points) on the season. Masters got on the board early as Kane Lawson slipped a clever ball thru to a streaking Stephen Noone who finished strongly to the near post. Midway thru the 1st half, the Masters’ 200+ minute shutout streak would come to an end as Nic Wilson was whistled for a handball in the box. Union Jerez finished the ensuing penalty kick to level the match. Moments later, Simon Logan had one of his patented runs forward and once again found Noone in behind the defense to finish confidently to regain the lead 2-1 into the half. The 2nd half would see the 30 mph winds behind the Masters’ backs, which pinned Union Jerez deep in their end. Derek Moore found the ball 20 yards out and finished nicely to the far post early in the half. Near the 65th minute, Brandon Best would take his 2nd consecutive corner kick and after challenging the keeper on the first, he made no mistake with the 2nd sending it directly in goal for an amazing “Olympico” aided by the strong winds. Brandon Sawada would finish the scoring in the 75th minute intercepting the ball from the keeper’s feet to blast into the open goal. Union Jerez’s captain requested the match end with 10 minutes remaining, as they had enough of playing into the fierce winds. Masters next play on May 5th vs. Colorado Rovers Elite in their efforts to win a fourth consecutive match and position themselves for a fourth consecutive season qualification in the Elite Division promotion playoffs.

Man of the Match: Stephen Noone for his two first half goals to continue his great form, he has scored in every match this season since joining the club this past winter

Over 30 Division:

Legends vs Dynamo FC
Result: Won 3-1
Coaches Recap: We started off strong versus a tough Dynamo team with Kyle Firebaugh finishing in the 15th min off a bouncing volley from 25 yards out from a slight flick from Felipe Carnerio. Legends controlled the play for the balance of the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Dynamo capitalized off a defensive error in the 44th minute and stayed that way going into halftime.
The second half got chippy, but we kept our composure and went up 2-1 in the 60th min with Justin Dohn finishing a beautiful pass over the top of the last defender from Firebaugh. Within 5 minutes, we found the back of the net one last time with David Nucifora crossing from the left side and finding Marco Delpiccolo with a calm finish.
Hunter almost kept a clean sheet, but we unfortunately let in our first goal of the season. Man of the match is Kyle with a goal, an assist, a crossbar, and all around solid play. Oh yeah, he also turns 40 tomorrow.

Womens Division:

FCDW vs Azteca Women
Result: Lost 1-4
Coaches Recap:
Scorers: A second half strong effort was not enough to override Azteca’s advancement in the first half, resulting in our women’s team first loss. Azteca came in strong and quick in the first half, dominating the center of the field. Azteca took advantage and confidently put four behind the net in the first 45 min. FC Denver’s Grover valiantly scored the lone goal with the assist to Silvestrone in the 13th minute. 
Half time was critical to our readjustment. After changing the formation and working out some kinks, Azteca was denied any further advancement. The ladies of FC Denver worked relentlessly and increased the intensity by taking more shots on goal the second half, but came up short at the end with the final score of 4-1. 
Hirschman gets WOTMf or her constant physical pressure on Azteca’s forwards. She, along with the rest of the backline, worked cohesively to deny Azteca at the end. Hirschman sacrificed her body and walked off with a gnarly battle wound to show for her efforts.
