FCD Fall 2019 Gameweek 1 Recap
CPL Premier Division:
Premier vs Union Jerez (3-1)
•Recap: Our game started as we expected for a first game. A little disjointed and touches and passes a little off. We had a few chances and gave up a couple. Mid first half a failed clearance led to an easy goal against. We had a few flashes of nice possession in the first that showed what we were capable of and what we would see a lot of in the second half.
The second half started much better. We were connecting passes and the ball side to side to open up the defense. This produced two beautifully worked goals. The first scored by Peter Jacobson. The second goal started with a free kick at the half. Three quick passes led to a through ball that was expertly dummied to Chris Clopper who beat the offsides trap. Chris sent a perfect cross into Fernando M who finished to put us ahead. This kind of possession continued for us throughout the second half. We controlled the game and let up very limited chances. The third goal came from a pk earned by strong play from Gus Rivera. Gus then took the pk that was originally saved by the keeper, only to have Gus emphatically finish on the rebound. We finished out the with calm possession adding a few more chances. A solid second half improvement should give us a lot of confidence going forward.
•Goals: Peter, Fernando, Gus
•MVP(s): Robert Acosta for being a beast in the air and Peter for starting the scoring and getting our possession game on point.
Colorado Super League:
United vs Chivas Guadalajara (2-2)
•Recap: Going into a new league, it is hard to know what to expect. We had just heard that the Colorado Super League does not have flying subs a couple days before our first match. We had some worries about fitness levels but knew our team chemistry would be one of our strengths. Our game management with subs was not the best but we will learn from this and improve. Carlos and Stephen scored some good goals and showed composure. Looking forward to our next match the weekend after labor day!
•Goals: Stephen, Carlos
•MVP:
CPL Elite Division:
U23 vs Lobos FC (1-2)
•Recap: We were our own worst enemy yesterday. We got off to a very spirited start and it looked as though things would be in our favor on the day. We dominated possession in the first 25-30 minutes and were doing our best to deal with a very thick grassed pitch with 9v9 goals in which to attempt scoring on. With a few missed shots, just wide and over, which most likely would've gone in a full sized goal, we finally were able to convert on one of our chances. A well executed give and go from Ari and Miguel, resulted in a nice finish from Ari to put us up 1-0.
As the game progressed, we started to lose our discipline defensively, our shape in the midfield started to become a major issue for us and Lobos started to regain possession and control of the match. With many reoccurring late tackles, spikes up challenges, and just overall chippy play, we began to lose our composure and over the course of the first 20+ minutes, managed to concede to PK's. The center official as the game began to grow increasingly out of hand, chose to end the game with about 23 minutes remaining, resulting in a 2-1 loss.
•Goals: Ari
•MVP: Hunter
Masters vs Athletic Club Sloans Lake (1-2)
•Recap: Masters lose to ACSL 2-1 in a great game. We were ahead at the half off a goal in the 30th min from Simon Logan cleaning up a corner kick from Derek Moore. ACSL equalized early in the 2nd half on a counter attack. Wilson had a 30 yard chip off the cross bar in the 65th min and then ACSL once again countered to take the lead. ACSL got a red card in the 80th min for spitting on Moschel. Masters pressed the final 10 min and Lawson scored the apparent equalizer but it was called back for offside. A great game in some extreme heat! Masters will stay in the Elite division as ASCL earn promotion to the Premier division.
•Goals: Simon
•MVP: Simon
CPL Over 30 Division:
Legends vs Newcastle FC (7-1)
•Recap: Legends faced a familiar foe in Newcastle to start our Fall 2019 at 9 am in Broomfield. Legends began the game playing 11 vs 10 and we controlled the pace of the game and created a number of chances through the first 10 mins of the game. In around the 15th minute, Felipe finished just outside the 6 yard box from a nice flick from Brady. After the first goal, Newcastle was up to full strength and the game started to settle, with the next goal coming in the 30th minute off a corner kick from Charlie that found Tyler making a a nice near-post run and finishing off a glancing header. Legends took the lead going into halftime 2-0.
Knowing Newcastle was going to have tired legs, Legends adopted a high-press-game-plan for the first 15 mins of the second half, and added three goals: first goals was a PK finished by Tyler after he was taken down in the box, second goal was a midfield finish from Kyle from a pass from Juan (gonna be difficult to beat this as goal of the year!!), and the third goal was finished by Tyler after a quick touch from Kyle. After going up 5-0, the game got pretty chippy with a few yellow cards being shown to Newcastle. Legends found the back of the net two more times — Felipe finished a first time volley from a cross from Charlie and then Vitor beat 3 or 4 Newcastle defenders (including the keeper) from a through ball from Justin. Newcastle got one goal back on a break away towards the end of the game.
•Goals: Felipe (2), Tyler (3), Kyle, Vitor
•MVP: Tyler with 3 goals, and then special shout out to our entire defense (including a fantastic club debut from Gabe in goal) who organized well and got our offense started from the back.
CPL Women’s League:
FCDW vs FC Boulder Women (4-5)
•Recap: We came out strong. Scored our first 4 goals of the season in the first half. No debate that the chemistry of the team is there. Juliana Grover scored 2 goals, Sophia Centi had one and Catherine Devitt had our first goal of the season. The team proved themselves thoroughly improved since the summer. We learned the keys that will prove our success and also what we need to work on. Coming away from this first game will be our biggest step forward. Unfortunately we lost 4-5 on a last minute unlucky goal by them. Erin Hamrick showed great tenacity on the defensive line and composure throughout her full 90 minute performance.
•Goals: Juliana (2), Sophia, Catherine
•MVP: Juliana Grover with 2 goals and an almost 90 minute performance on offense and defense.
