FCD Fall 2019 Gameweek 4 Recap

FCD vs Harpos

FCD vs Harpos

US Open Cup 2020 Round 1 Qualifier:

Premier vs Harpos (0-2)
Recap: We could not compete our journey of a third consecutive Open Cup run. With three of our starting players not returning from last season, we knew that it was going to be a hard match. The game was extremely well tested, but Harpos took their chances very well. The game was 50/50, sharing position and also momentum throughout the match. At times we forgot to play simply, giving up the ball during transition. This was a great match to learn from and we’ll be hungrier next year.
MVP(s): Peter Jacobson.

Colorado Super League:

United vs Colorado Springs FC (1-0)
Recap: United play another good game this weekend and got their first victory in the Colorado Super League beating Colorado Springs FC 1-0. United controlled most of the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. With 3 minutes left United got on the board when Buchanan served a free kick and after a brief scramble Villiani was able to poke it home. The second half started with United controlling the game. However as the match wore on Colorado Springs started to get a foothold in the game and create a couple good chances. United survived the last 20 minutes with stand in keeper Joe Esrock earning the shutout.
Goals: Villiani
MVP: David Villiani

CPL Elite Division:

U23 vs Rovers Elite (7-0)
Recap: The 23’s put together a solid performance yesterday finishing up with a 7-0 result after coming off just shy of a months break without a match.
Our opponent was often times undisciplined with their play as a team and very erratic individually when it came to the physicality of the game in the 1v1 matchups. We got off to a very positive start with the boys displaying much of what we had been working on in our training sessions with respect to our defensive shape and getting behind the ball early in our transitions. It allowed for us to maintain the majority of possession resulting in the first goal coming off a corner by Luis Ferros. Shortly after that we were awarded a PK which captain Malek Asbusina slotted with ease.

Rovers came out in the second half very spirited and gave us some trouble offensively. Once we settled down and dealt with that pressure, our offense started to heat back up and the flood gates opened up for us. Osvaldo, Brian, Carlos, Gerardo, and Alex accounting for the rest of the goals. Carlos Martinez is our Man of the Match as he did a fantastic job on the day, supporting both the offense and defense in the holding midfielder position.
Goals: Malek, Osvaldo, Brain, Carlos, Gerrardo, Alex, Luis
MVP: Carlos Martinez

Masters vs Real Colorado (7-1)
Recap: Masters defeated a short-handed Real Colorado 7-1, to improve to 2-0-0 on the season. Despite having a 2-man advantage, Masters found it difficult to break down Real's compact defense. Finally in the 25th minute, Derek Moore played a diagonal ball to Nic Wilson on the left side of the box that he took down well with his left foot to slot past the goalie into the far corner. A few minutes later, Josh Rubinstein would double the score as he was first to a loose ball in the box blasting a volley with pace into the net.
Masters would come out more aggressive in the attack the 2nd half with the wind behind their backs. Derek Moore put in a nice serve on a corner kick that Simon Logan challenged well to force the Real defender into an own goal. Wilson would soon add a 2nd goal on the day beating his defender to the ball on a Kane Lawson cross from the right wing to flick it with his right foot into the left corner. A few minutes later Lawson would add a goal finishing a great sequence down the right wing where Rob Quirk slipped him a nice pass to tap in. In the 75th min, Evan Greenwald added a 6th goal with an absolute rip with his right foot from 30 yards out. John Riggs would close the Masters scoring, as he headed home into an open net off a Wilson flick at the near post off a corner. A quick lapse in concentration after the ensuing kick-off would allow Real Colorado to tally their only goal of the day shortly before the final whistle.
Masters win 7-1 and will next face 1st place FC Inter in hopes to avenge its June play-off loss to get closer to the top of the table with 2 games in hand.
Goals: Wilson (2), Quirk, Greenwald, Riggs
MVP: Nick Wilson, 2 goals and 1 assist on the day

CPL Over 30 Division:

Legends vs Rush Brokers (4-1)
Recap: Legends was matched up against Rush Brokers this weekend, typically a side we have handled quite easily in the past. However, Rush Brokers had a victory against a decent opponent this year, so we knew they would have an improved side. The game started out a little back and forth, with Legends holding most of the possession. Rush had a couple opportunities with counter balls over the top, but Legends struck first with when Vitor slid a ball into Kyle who slotted it past the keeper. Rush then tied it up at 1-1 when Legends could not get the ball out of the box and bounced around a bit before Rush finished it. Legends again took the lead late in the first half with a great corner kick by Kyle and header finish by Brady. To start the second half Legends decided to put high pressure on the Rush defense to force turnovers. This game plan led to a turnover deep in the Rush half that Devon intercepted and hit a great shot from 35 out to chip the keeper. About 10 minutes later Legends put the game away for good when Felipe picked up a rebound from the keeper with a shot by Tyler. Another good victory as Legends stays perfect on the season 4-0.
Goals: Kyle, Brady, Devon, Felipe
MVP: Draper for filling in net with our goal keepers out and only allowing one past him.

CPL Women’s League:

FC Denver vs FC Denver West : (2-1)
Recap: The FC Denver Women’s Team had another exciting matchup against its sister club, FC Denver West. With a record of 0-0-4 in the last four match ups against FCDW, the ladies of FC Denver were looking to finally put a victory against this team.
FCDW started the match by attempting to shut down FC Denver’s midfield from progressing towards an attack. Our ladies did an impeccable job at defending every attack. During our attack at minute 21, the ball was cleared out by FCDW, but our Beth Plentl was at the right place at the right time as she received and slotted the ball above the goalkeeper putting the first goal on the scoreboard. An unlucky handball at minute 33 awarded FCDW a penalty kick which was capitalized. The half closed at 1-1.

The second half is where the fight truly was. Our midfielder Sophia Centi and Jesse McKenna were working hard to move the ball around and feed outside forwards, Jackie Sandoval, Cat Devitt, and Alex Laniewski. Tori Slattery had an impressive performance in the central midfield and forward positions. Outside full backs Katie Marcheso and Beth Plentl pushed forward to help the attack and with great stamina returned to defend on transitions. Full-backs Erin Hamrick, Lidia Battaglia, and Alaina Passavant fearlessly defended most opportunities on net, with Marla Crum, our goalkeeper, protecting the net from all opportunities FCDW attempted to score. The game defining goal came at the 60th minute with a beautiful set piece play started by Jackie Sandoval on the corner kick. She played a short pass to full-back Beth Plentl, who then crossed the ball to a determined Juliana Grover for a header that rocked Broomfield Commons Park. The last 30 minutes showed what hard work, determination, and love for the game was truly about. Shutting down any further advancements, FC Denver tirelessly defeated FC Denver West.
Goals: Plentl, Grover
MVP: Beth Plentl, who not only had a goal and critical assist to help the team come out victorious, but also for her relentless defending and interfering with advancements for a full 90 minutes.
