US OPEN CUP QUALIFYING: All Eyes on El Paso
A few weeks into the young Colorado Premier League Spring season, our focus now shifts to our 2019 US Open Cup 4th Round Qualifying match this Saturday April 6th in El Paso vs Southwest FC of the UPSL. The growth our club has experienced in the past 18 months has coincided with our remarkable recent success in US Open Cup qualifying. We’re 6-0 in Open Cup qualifying matches over the past two years (2018/2019), which lead to an entry in last year’s Open Cup Tournament (and two remarkable games therein), and now we are the precipice of qualifying for a second consecutive year. A big hurdle remains in our way, a trip down to Texas to battle a determined foe with aspirations of their own.
To those new to top US amateur soccer, qualifying for and playing in the US Open Cup is the biggest dream. The ability to play in professional level environments against top amateur and professional sides is the reason why clubs, like ours, put in so much work. It’s what the players deserve, the fans want to see, and an unparalleled opportunity for ambitious clubs to get noticed by soccer fans across the nation.
Last fall in 2019 US Open Cup Qualifying, we played in and won 3 matches against top Colorado teams (Indios FC, Harpos FC, and GAM United FC). In previous years, these three wins would have qualified us outright for the 2019 US Open Cup, which kicks off next month (May). But, with changes in the US Soccer pyramid (more teams being created higher up the pyramid), less spots in the tournament for amateur teams have been allotted, meaning for us, one more high-level qualifying win is required. This Saturday, one team will join 7 other top amateur teams nationwide in qualifying for US Open Cup 2019, and the other will go home empty handed.
It goes down Saturday!
